Whole Home Remodeling in Central New Jersey
By Houghton Contracting
Reimagine Your Entire Home
You love your street, your neighbors, and the walk into town, basically everything except the house itself, which stopped keeping up with your life a while ago.
A whole home remodel lets you stay right where you want to be and finally get the home you actually need, without the upheaval of moving. We reimagine the entire house as one connected project, the layout, the flow, and the finishes together, so it feels intentional instead of like a dozen mismatched updates.
As a design-build team in Mercer and Bucks County, Houghton Contracting plans the full scope up front and sequences the work so the house comes together room by room. You keep the address you love, and you get the home to match it.
Should You Remodel or Move?
It's the question almost every whole home project starts with, so it's worth thinking through honestly.
Moving means new listings, agent commissions, closing costs, and leaving behind a neighborhood, school, and community you may love. Remodeling lets you put that same money into the home you already have, in the location you already chose, and end up with a house designed around your family. For homeowners in established, high-value towns, staying and remodeling is often the smarter long-term investment.
We're happy to talk it through with you, even if part of the honest answer is that moving makes more sense for your situation.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WHOLE HOME REMODELING
- How much does a whole home remodel cost in New Jersey?expand_more
-
In our area, whole home remodels generally run about $125 to $200 per square foot for a cosmetic refresh, $200 to $350 for a mid-range remodel, and $350 to $600 or more per square foot for a luxury, down-to-the-studs renovation.
The final number depends on the size of your home, how much the layout changes, and the finishes you choose. Our free cost guide breaks it all down by level.
- Can I live in my home during a whole home remodel?expand_more
-
Sometimes, it's possible to live in your home during a whole home remodel. Other times, it's better not to.
If the work can be phased so part of the house stays livable, we'll sequence it that way and keep the active areas sealed off, clean, and safe. For a full gut or heavy structural work, most families are more comfortable staying elsewhere for part of the project. We'll walk through the realistic options with you before anything begins, so there are no surprises or last-minute decisions.
- How long does a whole home remodel take?expand_more
- Most whole home remodels run about 6 to 8 months of construction, depending on the size of the home and how much the layout changes. Design, selections, and permitting happen beforehand and add 3 to 4 months on the front end. We build a realistic schedule up front and keep you updated at every stage.
- Is a whole home remodel worth it in Central New Jersey?expand_more
- For homeowners in established, high-value neighborhoods in Central New Jersey, it very often is. Remodeling lets you invest in a home and location you already love instead of paying to move, and a well-designed renovation can add real long-term value in towns like Princeton, West Windsor, and Yardley. We'll help you make choices that balance the home you want with the investment that makes sense.
Our Process
It starts with a real conversation about your home, your goals, and your budget. We'll tell you honestly what's possible and what it takes to get there. No pressure and no pitch, just a clear sense of whether we're the right team for you.
Next, we turn your ideas into a detailed, buildable plan. You'll make your design and finish decisions on paper, where changes are easy and free. By the time we're done, you'll have a firm scope, timeline, and price with no guesswork.
Then we build, with one point of contact and a job site we keep clean and on schedule. You'll get regular updates, so you always know what's happening in your home. And when it's finished, our three-year labor warranty means we're still here if you ever need us.

Words From Our Clients
"Gary redid two rooms for us. Replaced the Sheetrock, leveled the floors, and installed laminate. The worker he used put in long days and was very professional. They did a great job, and I highly recommend them."
Patrick W.
"Gary has just finished a renovation of our first floor. His crew worked hard every day and gave us amazing results. He arrived when he said he would and completed what he promised. In a world where contractors don’t show up or don’t deliver, I can highly recommend Houghton Contracting for a successful project."
Bryan A.
"Gary just finished a job at our house and we could not be happier! They arrived on time each morning, cleaned up before leaving and were more professional than any contractor we’ve ever used. Quote was impressive as we had two others along Houghton Contracting. Materials used were better quality than what other two were going to use and for less money. They didn’t even charge for travel time! Would highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work. No doubt in my mind!!"
Michele M.
"Gary and his team has taken on a huge renovation job that included gutting most of my house, replacing electrical, insulation, drywall, painting, finishing floors, kitchen renovations and building me a laundry room…you name it Houghton Contracting has done it! Every step of this project has been done so well and I couldn’t be more pleased. I would recommend Houghton Contracting to anyone who is looking to beautify their home!"
Maggie M.
Great experience. Needed a small job done and within a week of talking with Gary, the job was scheduled and completed. Could not ask for a better experience.
Ian L.
"I called Gary for an estimate to fix out deteriorating detached garage. He came the same day to provide an estimate and within a week our garage was fixed. Although the project took a half-day longer than expected, Gary honored his original estimate. I am very happy with the quality of work and would recommend Houghton Contracting."
