Home Additions in Central New Jersey
By Houghton Contracting
More Room to Live. The Same Home You Love.
The house felt huge when you moved in, and now there's a line for the bathroom, nowhere to put a home office, and no good spot for the people you love when they come to stay.
A home addition gives you the square footage you need, built right onto the home you already have, so you gain space without giving up your location. The hard part is making new construction look like it always belonged, and that's exactly where we're at our best: matching rooflines, siding, trim, and proportions so the addition blends into the original home.
As a design-build team, Houghton Contracting handles the structural engineering, the township approvals, and the construction together, so the new space is sound, permitted, and seamless.
Types of Home Additions New Jersey Homeowners Choose
Additions come in a few different shapes, and the right one depends on how much space you need and what your lot and home will support.
A room addition extends your footprint outward for a new bedroom, family room, or bigger kitchen. A second-story addition builds up instead of out, which is ideal when your lot is tight but your needs aren't. An in-law or primary suite adds a private, self-contained space for aging parents, guests, or a well-earned retreat. A bump-out is a smaller extension that borrows just enough square footage to make a cramped kitchen or bath finally work.
Not sure which one fits your home? That's what the first conversation is for.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HOME ADDITIONS
- How much does a home addition cost in New Jersey?expand_more
-
In Central New Jersey, additions generally run about $350 to $450 per square foot for a straightforward addition with standard finishes, $450 to $650 for a mid-range space like a primary suite or kitchen expansion, and $650 to $900 or more per square foot for a complex, high-end addition.
The cost depends on the size, whether you're building out or up, and the finishes you choose. Our free cost guide walks through it by level.
- Can I live in my home during an addition?expand_more
-
In most cases, yes. Because an addition is built onto your home rather than gutting the inside, we can usually keep your daily life running while we work.
We seal off the construction zone, protect your existing space, and plan the connection points to keep the disruption to a minimum.
If your home addition includes updates further into the home, like flooring, your construction schedule will keep you informed as to when more of the home is off-limits.
- How long does a home addition take?expand_more
-
Most additions take about 3 to 6 months of construction, depending on the size and complexity, with second-story additions landing on the longer end.
Design, engineering, and township approvals happen first and add time on the front end. We'll give you a realistic schedule up front so you always know what to expect.
- Will my home addition match the rest of my house?expand_more
- That's one of the things we care about most. We match your roofline, siding, trim, window styles, and proportions so the new space looks like it was always part of the house, inside and out. A good addition shouldn't announce itself. It should just feel like the home was always this size.
Our Process
It starts with a real conversation about your home, your goals, and your budget. We'll tell you honestly what's possible and what it takes to get there. No pressure and no pitch, just a clear sense of whether we're the right team for you.
Next, we turn your ideas into a detailed, buildable plan. You'll make your design and finish decisions on paper, where changes are easy and free. By the time we're done, you'll have a firm scope, timeline, and price with no guesswork.
Then we build, with one point of contact and a job site we keep clean and on schedule. You'll get regular updates, so you always know what's happening in your home. And when it's finished, our three-year labor warranty means we're still here if you ever need us.

Words From Our Clients
"Gary redid two rooms for us. Replaced the Sheetrock, leveled the floors, and installed laminate. The worker he used put in long days and was very professional. They did a great job, and I highly recommend them."
Patrick W.
"Gary has just finished a renovation of our first floor. His crew worked hard every day and gave us amazing results. He arrived when he said he would and completed what he promised. In a world where contractors don’t show up or don’t deliver, I can highly recommend Houghton Contracting for a successful project."
Bryan A.
"Gary just finished a job at our house and we could not be happier! They arrived on time each morning, cleaned up before leaving and were more professional than any contractor we’ve ever used. Quote was impressive as we had two others along Houghton Contracting. Materials used were better quality than what other two were going to use and for less money. They didn’t even charge for travel time! Would highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work. No doubt in my mind!!"
Michele M.
"Gary and his team has taken on a huge renovation job that included gutting most of my house, replacing electrical, insulation, drywall, painting, finishing floors, kitchen renovations and building me a laundry room…you name it Houghton Contracting has done it! Every step of this project has been done so well and I couldn’t be more pleased. I would recommend Houghton Contracting to anyone who is looking to beautify their home!"
Maggie M.
Great experience. Needed a small job done and within a week of talking with Gary, the job was scheduled and completed. Could not ask for a better experience.
Ian L.
"I called Gary for an estimate to fix out deteriorating detached garage. He came the same day to provide an estimate and within a week our garage was fixed. Although the project took a half-day longer than expected, Gary honored his original estimate. I am very happy with the quality of work and would recommend Houghton Contracting."
