Houghton Contracting is a family-run design-build firm serving homeowners across Mercer and Bucks County. We build custom homes and take on remodels and additions of every size, and we do it all with the same belief: your home deserves to be built honestly and built well.

What sets our work apart isn't only the craftsmanship, it's the way we guide you through it, keeping you informed and comfortable from the first conversation to the final walkthrough. We're not the biggest builder in the area, and we don't want to be. We'd rather be the one families trust, recommend to their neighbors, and call again for the next project.

How We Got Here

Our founder, Gary Houghton, didn't set out to run a construction company. He started in the plumbers' union and later took a job with a painting and carpentry business, where he kept running into the same thing: careless work that shortchanged the people paying for it. That bothered him enough to start taking on his own projects and doing them the way he believed they should be done. In 2003, that standard became Houghton Contracting.

More than twenty years later, the company is still built on that same idea. Gary's son Nick grew up around the work and chose to make it his own, bringing the next generation into the business.

Together, they've built Houghton Contracting into a name that families across Central New Jersey trust, one honest project at a time.

Owner

Gary founded Houghton Contracting more than 30 years ago on a simple principle: no hidden surprises, just honest work he can stand behind. His favorite part of the job hasn't changed since day one: sitting down with homeowners and turning their ideas into a home that looks exactly the way they pictured it.

Owner, Candelori Electric

Bob has been Houghton Contracting's trusted electrical partner for more than 20 years, running the family business his father started back in 1986. He treats every home and job site like his own, seeing the work through until it's neat, clean, and exactly the way the customer wants it.

Stefany Durate

Project Manager, C&L Home Improvement

Stefany has partnered with Houghton Contracting for about five years, handling pricing, estimates, and project coordination to keep jobs running smoothly. She treats every project like it's her own, staying on top of the details and making sure the homeowner is happy from start to finish.

Our Process

1 | Consultation

It starts with a real conversation about your home, your goals, and your budget. We'll tell you honestly what's possible and what it takes to get there. No pressure and no pitch, just a clear sense of whether we're the right team for you. 

2 | Design

Next, we turn your ideas into a detailed, buildable plan. You'll make your design and finish decisions on paper, where changes are easy and free. By the time we're done, you'll have a firm scope, timeline, and price with no guesswork. 

3 | Build & Beyond

Then we build, with one point of contact and a job site we keep clean and on schedule. You'll get regular updates, so you always know what's happening in your home. And when it's finished, our three-year labor warranty means we're still here if you ever need us.
